Rachel Baxter, 'You were a glacier' 7x7ft, mixed media paint on canvas, 2019 Lot #21

I am interested in materials and processes with an inherent ability to transform. Through experimenting with techniques such as oxidizing metals directly onto the canvas, drawing with smoke, and suspending pigments in water as it evaporates, I get to witness these transformations first hand. Working this way requires that I embrace the unexpected. The results hover between two rivaling descriptions like growing and decaying, emerging and fading. They reflect the in-between.
