Kenneth Ragsdale 'The River' Archival Inkjet Print from Photo of Fabricated Paper Structure 20' H x 30" W 2019 Lot #32

My work is constructed from memory, and references my own childhood narrative and its relationship with that of the growth of America as a nation. I begin by making rough sketches, then working drawings, and then schematics. These are cut out, folded, and tabbed together. I work through the camera to assemble the scene. All of the color in the images comes from colored lights. I am interested in building an atmosphere of tension and anticipation, in which even the most mundane event from my past can be reformed into an epic visual story.

Pacific Northwest native Kenneth Ragsdale’s work, derived from personal memories, involves a mixture of drawing, painting, sculpture, paper-craft, theatre lighting, and photography. He received a BFA from The Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon and an MFA from The University at Albany, SUNY. He teaches in the Art Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and serves on the board of Collar Works Gallery in Troy, NY. He is represented by Front Room Gallery in New York City.
