Kristy Hughes 'One Up', Insulation Board, Epoxy Resin, Spray Paint, Latex Paint, 53.5 x 10 x 14”, 2021 Lot #14

I make sculptures about empowerment. My work is a reclamation of uncertainty and a celebration of honesty. The minimal shapes, bold colors, and piecemealed compositions represent agency, sureness, and being unapologetic. The works are a proxy for my own voice and search for autonomy. By extension, they are a recognition and nod in solidarity to the unheard, misunderstood, and silenced voices of others.
Kristy Hughes received an MFA from Indiana University and a MA and BA from Eastern Illinois University. She has attended residencies at the Hambidge Center, The Studios at MASS MoCA, Vermont Studio Center, and Residency Unlimited in Brooklyn, NY.
Hughes has shown across the US and has been published in New American Paintings, Friend of the Artist, and Create Magazine, among others. She is Visiting Assistant Professor at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, and the 2021 Residency Coordinator for the Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency. She is represented by Brandt-Roberts Galleries in Columbus, OH.
