"Immortal Diamond" by Marc Ellen Hamel Lot #19

Immortal%20diamond

A word from the artist, Marc Ellen Hamel:

"Starting in my college days, I have been a lover of the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins. I have read his poetry, letters, and discussions of his work often. One book about him was called “Immortal Diamond” and he is certainly that in my eyes. I have also made a number of
artworks referring back to his influence on me. This one is a mixed media piece that includes objects that take me to the past and the present that thrill my eye….including words cut from the book. It is incased in resin, which makes the piece almost immortal; if not immortal, then at least a very long time." - Marc Ellen Hamel, Artist

Mixed Media, 11.5” x 9.5” in black wood frame.

About the artist:

Marc Ellen Hamel is an Oakland-based artist working in abstract oil painting, printmaking, and collage. She grew up in Seattle surrounded by forests and the many bodies of water of the Pacific Northwest. As a high school student, she haunted the galleries and museums of Seattle and hoped to someday emulate the artists who inspired her. After attending the University of Washington, majoring in English Literature and Art, she moved to the Bay Area.

She has focused primarily on abstract oil painting throughout her 30-year career, with a goal to find and express the inner world of memory and hope, while satisfying her deep attraction to strong color and pattern. She began to include a focus on monotype printmaking about 15 years ago, reacting to the surprise elements of this process and the intense colors of the inks. This led to her recent series of monotype collage that has occupied her for the past year.
