Huntington Beach Oil Spill Work of Art Lot #4

3

This print is from a body of work that explores the material of an environmental disaster. In October of 2021 a pipeline from offshore platforms Elly and Ellen broke and spilled thousands of gallons of crude oil into the Pacific Ocean. The news of the spill came out late in the night, the next morning I went down to Huntington Beach to see the damage and collect some of the material. There I encountered heavy machinery sealing off the wetlands to try and protect them as best they could. After collecting a few cups full of tar covered sand I brought the material back into my studio. After a week of experiments I was able to separate the sand from the tar and worked it into a pigment used to create this print.
