Concrete Forest, oil on canvas by Kristina Hagman. I have a fascination for freeways. The idea came to me that the columns and spans of the freeways are visually akin to Greek temples. I explored the idea that freeways are like Temples of Transit, and I depicted the freeway structures on canvas as Temples, a critique of our current culture’s worship of car culture. The architect Lawrence Halprin said, “Each exit ramp offers a different visual as well as kinesthetic sensation.
