Bio

Jason Kates van Staveren is an instructor of digital media and an artist working in photography, video and installation.

Prior to and while studying art, Jason worked in the food service and home building industries. Years spent learning to work hard to pay the bills served him well academically and helped shape his artistic practice.

Jason holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Film, Photography and Visual Arts from Ithaca College's Park School of Communications, where he graduated summa cum laude, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography and Combined Media from the University at Albany.

Before moving to Albany, he worked for a period of time as a newspaper photographer at the Ithaca Journal and later as a video editor at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Macaulay Library. He also worked professionally as a photographer, producing documentation for other artists and as a media consultant, assisting clients with needs ranging from video compression to digital image retouching.

In 2015, he continued a teaching career begun as a graduate student, serving as a lecturer at both the University at Albany and at Hudson Valley Community College. Jason's teaching experience includes Digital and Darkroom Photography and Photojournalism courses, Intro, Intermediate and Advanced Digital Imaging, Animation and Graphic Design, as well as workshops on video production and editing, color management, large format printing and archival file management.

When his art practice and teaching duties aren't dominating his time Jason, enjoys cycling, gardening and grilling food with his family.

Artist's Statement

The Services series is made as part of a preoccupation with imaging objects I consider "overlookable." That is, objects that we see every day without noticing, and certainly without recognizing their formal grace. In this case, the objects are the pipes, wires and other assorted mechanical interfaces that stick out of the sides of buildings. I'm drawn to a sense of the outcast that I see when composing them. I've made pictures of other "overlookables" including the Dryer Lint series and the Shower Drain Hair series. But unlike those, the Services pictures must be made out in the world. I get to explore and seek them out, which feels especially magical now."
