1923 US Paper $1 Silver Dollar Lot #113
This large-size $1 Silver Certificate, often referred to by collectors as a “Horseblanket” due to its substantial dimensions, hails from a period before the U.S. standardized its paper currency size in 1928. Measuring 7 3/8" by 3 1/8", these notes were simply too large to fit in the average wallet of the day.
Prominently featured on the front is a detailed portrait of George Washington, beneath which is the inscription: “One Silver Dollar payable to the bearer on demand.” This statement reflected the certificate’s original purpose—redeemable for an equivalent amount of silver coinage at any time.
The note also showcases the classic blue Treasury seal and matching blue serial numbers, design elements that distinguish Silver Certificates from other forms of U.S. currency. Issued during an era when the U.S. was still on the silver standard, these notes served as both a trusted medium of exchange and a symbol of the nation's monetary policy at the time.
