Quilts were used in African American history for slaves to send messages to guide slaves to freedom. It was illegal in slave-holding states to teach slaves to read, and slaves could not communicate in writing. Quilts were used to help them communicate messages in the stitches, patterns, designs, and colors on how to get ready to escape, what to do on the trip, and where to go.
